WELCOME TO 8th GRADE ENGLISH 2015-2016!!
Do NOW:
A. Nametags:
Fold a piece of paper into a triangle on your desk and write
your first and last name with a pen or marker! Hold on to
these name tags!
Objectives:
We will be able to understand classroom procedures and expectations
We will be able to understand classroom procedures and expectations
We will be able to grasp what English class is about and what I will be learning throughout the year.
We will begin to think about the purpose of reading and writing literacy in our lives.
II. Journal Launch
Journal Launch Questions:
Respond to one or more of the following questions:
You have 5 minutes to write. Use your full time.
If you finish one question, you may start another!
1. Do you agree or disagree with this definition of a leader? Why or why not?
2 . Do you consider yourself a leader at this point in your life? Why or why not?
3. Name one person you view as a leader. Describe what makes them a leader.
III. Procedures: A. Discuss:
Turn to your table group and share out your thoughts about the quote/question. (5 minutes)
(turn to table group means: if you are in the front row, stand up, turn your desk around, and make sure all four desks touch and make one large desk together. Make eye contact with all members and sit up straight)
Go around in a circle and each share your response to one of the questions.
B. Whole class Share: move out of table groups and share response out with the whole class.
Things to practice:
1. TRACK :when your teacher says TRACK, it means everyone needs to be looking at the speaker and to remind yourself to shift your body to face the speaker as well. All eyes need to be on the person who is speaking at all times!
2. VOICE: when your teacher says VOICE, it means you need to shift your voice to meet the classroom expectations. You want to speak loud enough and clear enough for every person to hear you.
3. SENTENCE: when your teachers says Sentence, it means make a complete sentence out of your thoughts. No, because... Yes, because.. I agree because... I disagree because..
4. NO OPT OUT: We are all here to learn, to hear each other and to be heard. If I say the phrase, "no opt out" it means that we do not accept "I don't know" or "I don't care" as an answer in this class. I can help you. Your classmates can help you, but we must strive for excellence if we are going to find success this year and in college. If you see me allowing someone in this class to "opt out," please speak to me privately and bring it to my attention. We are in this together.
C. Meet your teacher!
We will read my letter to you and go over the initial expectations for your first assignment, which is due on Tuesday, September 8th. If we have time at the end of the period, we can begin our letters now.
EXIT: Go over Shout outs and Call outs procedure and bathroom procedure (time permitting)
