Prince Ea is a famous youtuber who writes rap songs, spoken word and motivational videos. This is one of his well known pieces called “Why I think the world should end.” (Cut video off at 3:58) Students respond to questions in 4 minutes.
a. What was one part or line you identified with the most? Why?
b.What is the video’s message?Do you agree or disagree? Why?
c. How do you believe we can shift things in this world for the better?

moving forward. We are working on your writing
to help you best EXPRESS yourself, EXPRESS your
thoughts and to ENGAGE with the world. Don't give
up. Don't get frustrated. If you do, take a deep
breath. Forgive yourself and move on. Take it step
by step. You
are all leaders with the power to change the
world. It's just an essay :)
Observations from grading your practice
assessments:
Strengths:
Those who annotated AND used the outline
demonstrated significant improvement in
organization.
Almost everyone used at least one quotation
when proving their claim/thesis.
Most students included an introduction, three
body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Areas for Improvement:
Plot summary! We want to avoid this.
Using "I" or "Me" statements. For example, "I
think" "My thesis is" "I will show in my essay"
Use of citations.
Establishing a clear thesis statement and
writing it in the introductory paragraph.
Elaborating on the quotation in order to prove
the theme of the story.
Practice: In your elbow pairs, correct the
following paragraph making edits we
discussed.
I think that the main character in "The
Necklace" is very selfish. I can show this
when the author states, "she threw the
invitation on the table, murmuring." (page 2)
She was invited to a party and she threw the
invitation on the table which proves she is
selfish.
Take 6 minutes to correct the paragraph and
elaborate in order to prove the theme/claim
that "people who are selfish suffer more than
those who are grateful."
Review answers.
Whole class analysis:
We will read and grade
a sample essay using the critical eye we have
developed over the past few weeks.
Group Assignment:
In your writing groups, grade the sample
essay before you. Be prepared to defend the
grade your group comes up with.
Closing: Shout-outs and call-outs
Homework: Review the flash draft format and
work on optional essay corrections!

Take two minutes to quietly review the assessment rubric. Which area do you need to focus on the most during our district assessment and why?
List three steps you will take to improve on this area as you take the assessment.

Writing Group Agenda
1. All members look over the rubric and ask any clarifying questions.
2. Read Draft. Peers take turns reading the essay aloud. When not reading, peers are taking notes on the rubric.
3. Peer Discussion. Peers each share at least one strength of the paper and at least one suggestion for revision. Notes are taken no rubric.
4. Group decides on a final grade.
5. Thank You. Group members thank each other for their effort.
